Climate change expert comes to Exeter

The ticking time bomb of climate change and how South West England can help to reduce its effects are under discussion at an event in Exeter next week.
Climate change expert Mark Lynas will be presenting what he sees as the urgent predicament of global warming at the Exeter Picture House on Tuesday, November 13. The talk will be followed by a showing of the Oscar-winning film An Inconvenient Truth by Nobel Peace Prize holder Al Gore.
Lynas writes a fortnightly column on the environment for the New Statesman and is a frequent contributor on climate change issues to the Guardian and the Independent. His book, Six Degrees: Our Future on a Hotter Planet, was published in March this year. It charts how a degree by degree rise in temperature could lead to rainforests turning into deserts and the melting of the polar ice caps.
Simon Hooton, director of policy and strategy at the South West Regional Development Agency which is sponsoring the talk, said: "The debate about 'one planet living' is a complex one, but the notion of environmental limits is something we'd like people to discuss as it will inform the approach to the next Regional Economic Strategy. That's along with four other topics: population, energy, leadership and globalisation. Mark's argument is required listening for anyone who cares about South West England's journey to a low-carbon economy."
The event is also supported by the CBI and the Environment Agency.
The free event takes place at Exeter Picture House on Tuesday, November 13 at 12.15 pm, followed by a book signing and buffet lunch. Places will be allocated on a first come, first serve basis. To reserve, telephone 01392 229379 or email swdebates [at] southwestrda [dot] org [dot] uk
